Nintendo Platform Technology Development , abbreviated to Nintendo PTD , is a division of the Japanese video game company Nintendo . She is responsible for the development of new hardware , new operating systems and networks. The department was therefore also responsible for the development of the Nintendo Switch .

It was created in September 2015 from the merger of Nintendo Integrated Research & Development (IRD) and Nintendo System Development (SDD).

history

After Satoru Iwata's death , Tatsumi Kimishima replaced him as the interim president of Nintendo. His job was to reorganize the management of Nintendo. On September 14, 2015, Nintendo published a document that announced the change in personnel due to the merger of Nintendo Integrated Research & Development , IRD for short, and Nintendo System Development , SDD for short. This merger took place on September 16, 2015, simultaneously with the merger of Nintendo EAD and SPD to form Nintendo EPD .

Nintendo EPD was responsible for developing the Nintendo Switch . They were supported by HAL Laboratory , among others . In the course of this they were also responsible for the development of the Joy-Con , which they developed in consultation with software developers.

Ko Shiota, the previous deputy head of Nintendo IRD , is the head of the department, and Takeshi Shimada is his deputy. Shiota reports to Genyo Takeda who holds the position of "Technology Fellow" (German: Technical Advisor).
