Nintendo Integrated Research & Development (shortened to IRD ) is a division of the Japanese video game and console developer Nintendo . It has the function of an internal first-party development studio . Her main responsibilities include developing new consoles and associated peripherals . Nintendo IRD was founded in the 1980s under the name Nintendo Research & Development 3 under the leadership of Genyo Takeda. NRD 3 was responsible for numerous technical achievements in the console area and even developed some games in this area itself. As 3D technology advanced, NRD 3 changed its name to Nintendo Integrated Research & Development.

IRD is divided into two sub-divisions. The Integrated Research & Development Department focuses on the development of stationary consoles, the necessary hardware and the associated peripheral devices. The Research & Engineering Development Department , on the other hand, takes care of the development of mobile consoles. These subdivisions usually work closely together and only have a different focus for the individual technologies.

On February 16, 2013, Nintendo announced that the Research & Engineering Development Department would be dissolved and incorporated into the Integrated Research & Development Department .

On September 14, 2015, Nintendo announced that Nintendo IRD would merge with Nintendo System Development (SDD) to become Nintendo Platform Technology Development (PTD) on September 16, 2015 . Since then Ko Shiota has acted as head of department.

Integrated Research & Development Department

The Integrated Research & Development Department is the responsible development office for all stationary Nintendo consoles. This department is divided into five groups that work closely with each other but each focus on a specific aspect of development. Both the responsible manager Genyo Takeda and some technicians come from the old R & D3 department.

Research & Engineering Department

The Research & Engineering Department was responsible for the development of handheld consoles. It was structured similarly to the IRD. The manager Satoru Okada and most of the leading designers have been taken over by the R & D1 studio.
