Wario Land II ( Japanese ワ リ オ ラ ン ド 2 盗 ま れ た 財宝 , Wario Rando 2: Nusumareta Zaihō , literally: Wario Land 2: The Stolen Treasure ) is a video game from the Nintendo company . It is from the action-adventure genre , but also contains elements of a platformer and was released on March 26, 1998 for the Game Boy . Almost a year later it was sold under the same title for the release of the Game Boy Color with color support.

action

While Wario is sleeping in his bed, the pirates known from the predecessor Wario Land - Super Mario Land 3 break into his castle with their leader Captain Syrup, steal Wario's gold from his treasury and flood the entire building. Wario wakes up, repairs the water damage in order to have to determine the theft, and sets out to pursue the pirates.

Gameplay

The player controls Wario sequentially through successive levels and collects gold coins. Wario is controlled with the directional pad and the two primary buttons on the Game Boy. If he jumps on an opponent, he is stunned for a short time and can be picked up and thrown by Wario. If the player hits another opponent, both are defeated. Defeated opponents leave coins that Wario can collect. Other attack options are a pounding attack, in which Wario drops his buttocks on the ground, and a ramming attack, which lets the character sprint forward at high speed with his upper arm held up. Wario can also slide down slopes to curl up and roll for distances.

Wario can change its shape due to various influences. For example, if he catches fire, he will run around in panic; the player can only control the direction of movement and jumps. After a while, his entire body is wrapped in fire, and Wario can destroy enemies and specially marked blocks that previously blocked the path. The fire effect wears off after a while, or when Wario comes into contact with water.

Another form of shaping is to let the character squeeze wide under a heavy weight. In its compressed form, Wario falls more slowly and evenly to the ground, similar to the leaf of a tree, and in this way can cover greater distances in the air.

If Wario is injured by an opponent, he loses part of the money he has collected. An energy bar does not exist. So there is no way to fail at a level in the game; you can save and interrupt the game in a level. The money collected will be credited to a collective amount after completing the level.

The player is challenged to use Wario's abilities and transformations to advance through the levels. In addition to the blocks that can be destroyed by fire, there are also other block types: Generic, brittle blocks can be destroyed by jumping to the bottom , similar to Super Mario Jump-'n'-Runs, but also by stomping the Roll and the ramming attack. Other blocks can only be destroyed with thrown opponents.

Levels are ended in different ways: Most of the time it means entering a specially marked door, or the goal can be to defeat a final boss . In individual cases there are also certain tasks that are briefly formulated as text before the start of the level.
Certain levels have two options for completing a level. Depending on how you end the level, other levels will follow. If you defeat a boss for the first time in a final level, you can repeat any level you have already passed. You select the level in a graph- shaped overview and can see from the divisions of the graph which level can be ended alternatively. Every last level in such a path ends with a boss.

After completing each level, if you have collected enough money in the level, you can win a small part of a treasure map in a mini-game . There is also a treasure hidden in each level. If you have collected the fractions from all levels, this unlocks a memory game and a final, time-limited level.

technology

  • The game is on a 8 Mbit large module .
  • The score is automatically saved after each level; within a level the player can save in the pause menu, leaving the game to the title screen.
  • In contrast to its predecessor, there are no separate entries for different game progressions.
