Wario Land 4 ( Japanese ワ リ オ ラ ン ド ア ド バ ン ス ヨ ー キ の お 宝 , Wario Rando Adobansu: Yōki no Otakara , German about "Wario Land Advance: Yoki's Treasure") is a video game from the Nintendo company . It is of the action-adventure genre , but also contains elements of a platformer and was released on August 21, 2001 for the Game Boy Advance .

In 2008 a follow-up was released with Wario Land: The Shake Dimension .

action

In the sequence at the beginning, only one city can be seen at night, until a shadow is shown leaving a house and the person gets into a car and drives off. The car almost runs over a sleeping cat and a newspaper falls out of the car. This shows that a pyramid was found in a jungle, in which treasure is said to be located. Then it slowly gets light and it becomes clear that the driver of the car is Wario.

After Wario reaches and enters the pyramid, he falls into a trap door. There he finds an entry level, the Hall of Hieroglyphs , in which the various actions are explained to the player. After the level he meets a final boss, Spoiled Rotten . Then Wario unlocks more passages.

After Wario has defeated all bosses there, the way to the pyramid is unlocked. There Wario first has to master the Golden Passage before he faces the final boss, the Golden Diva . After defeating them, the pyramid collapses. Wario just manages to take the treasures with him and brings them home in his car.

In the epilogue a similar sequence is shown as at the beginning, only this time the cat is white. This time Wario does not want to go on a treasure hunt, but to take part in a competition.

Gameplay

The player controls Wario through 18 different levels and collects keys and puzzle pieces (four per level). 16 of the levels are distributed over the four main passages, the other two are the tutorial level Hall of Hieroglyphs and the last level Golden Passage . In the 16 regular levels there is also an audio CD with music, which can be listened to in a sound room after successful collection.

The four main passages are:

  • Emerald Passage ( Emerald -Passage), a world full of plants.
  • Ruby Passage ( Rubin -Passage), a world full of machines.
  • Topaz Passage ( Topaz -Passage), a world full of toys.
  • Sapphire Passage ( sapphire passage ), a world full of ghosts and dangers.

Wario is no longer invulnerable as in the two predecessors. He now has an energy bar consisting of eight hearts. If Wario is surprised, he loses a heart, all hearts are gone, Wario dies; however, there is no number of lives and therefore no game over .

At the end of each level there is a switch with a frog symbol. If Wario jumps on this switch, a countdown begins. Now, Wario's mission is to reach the switch within the time limit, since the portal through which Wario entered and immediately closed again was reopened by the switch. If Wario fails in the allotted time, he first loses all the money he has collected and when that is gone too, he dies. In the Golden Passage , Wario even lands on the counter immediately, so you have little time to collect the puzzle pieces and the key right from the start.

In contrast to Wario Land 2 and Wario Land 3 , you can no longer collect unlimited coins here, as opponents once defeated will not be revived when leaving a room unless they leave no money behind.

In addition, there are bonus rooms that can be accessed through a purple tube. There you have to solve a riddle to get a diamond or something similar.

Warrior's transformations

The metamorphoses Elektro-Wario, Wollknäuel-Wario, Invisible Wario, Divided Wario and Torkel-Wario from the predecessor are no longer included. Also included are:

  • Bee Wario : After being stung by a bee, Wario is inflated and flies until you hit a ceiling.
  • Spring Wario : Wario is hit by a hammer and jumps into the air. Here, however, Wario only jumps once.
  • Thick Wario : Wario becomes so heavy that he can smash harder blocks and kill any enemy when touched.
  • Bat Wario : Wario transforms into the same when touched by a bat and can fly as high as he likes. The ability ends after Wario comes into contact with light or water. With this transformation, Wario is completely invulnerable.
  • Frozen Wario : Wario is hit by a jet of ice and flies backwards until he hits a wall. So it can also get through spines.
  • Snowball Wario : Wario has been hit by snow and if he rolls down a ramp, he can destroy certain blocks.
  • Fire Wario : Wario runs around briefly and the player can only control jumps and direction of movement. After a short time it becomes a kind of flame ball that destroys blocks with a fire symbol when touched.
  • Bubble Wario : Wario has been caught by a bubble and goes back to normal when touching the surface of the water. So he can u. a. also through currents.
  • Flat Wario : Wario was flattened and can now go through narrow corridors with z. B. a hole through it. The transformation ends, like almost all others, when it comes into contact with water.
  • Zombie Wario : So Wario can come through certain platforms. The ability ends when it comes into contact with light or water.

Whereas in Wario Land 2 and 3 a certain music was played in most of the transformations, the level music is now distorted depending on the transformation with each transformation.
