Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 or Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land ( Jap .スーパーマリオランド3ワリオランド, Hepburn : Supa Mario Rando 3: Wario Rando ) is a Jump 'n' Run - Video Game of the Japanese company Nintendo . However, the name of the game is misleading as Mario hardly makes an appearance in this game. Instead, the player controls Mario's evil rival Wario . It is the first game in which Wario appears as both the title character and the game character . It has sold over 5 million times. The plot picks up on the ending of Super Mario Land 2 , in which Wario was evicted from Mario's castle, which he had previously occupied. Wario is now looking for a new place to stay. Then he learns by chance that the Brown Sugar pirates have stolen the gold statue of Princess Peach (known from the Mario games) and that Mario should get her back. Wario immediately makes plans for what he could do with the precious “gold child”. With the wealth he wants to get his own castle. So Wario immediately travels to the Pepper Island ( Kitchen Island ), where the pirates' hideout is located, in order to win the statue and other treasures. However, this is easier said than done, as the pirates, especially their leader Captain Syrup , do not want to give up the treasure just like that.

Gameplay

General

Before entering a level , Wario is visible on a map of the Pepper Island, on which he can be maneuvered to the desired level. After successfully passing a level, the next is unlocked. As is typical of the genre, the Pepper Island is divided into several areas, seven in number, which consist of several levels, and in each area you have to defeat a boss .

The Warios controls are reminiscent of the Mario games, but have some major differences. Just like Mario, Wario can jump on opponents, but that only stuns them. Then he can grab it and throw it away, and use it as a projectile against other opponents. In contrast to Mario, who often suffers damage just by touching an opponent, Wario can bump a large number of opponents from the side and push them against a wall so that they can also be stunned and picked up. If Wario hits a sharp object that an opponent is carrying, for example, Wario also suffers damage.

With a distinctive attack from Wario, the rib hit, which is one of Wario's trademarks in the entire Wario Land series, opponents can also be defeated, but with armed opponents only on the unprotected side. It also shatters less stable blocks, which is often required to clear the way.

If Wario is injured in his normal form or in one of the special forms by an opponent, he transforms into mini-Wario , who loses a life if he is damaged again and cannot use the rib hit.

In addition to defeating the pirates, another of the main objectives of the game is to collect as many coins as possible, which will be used to pay for Wario's new home at the end of the game. Pots

In addition to its normal form Wario can take some specific forms in the game, which he called the collection of pots (Engl. Pots obtained). Like some of the coins, these are hidden in blocks. The following pots can be found in the game:

  • Garlic Pot : If Wario is not in the shape of Mini-Wario, he transforms into Taurus Wario . Collecting a heart increases the value by ten points, and defeating an opponent increases the value by one. If the value exceeds 99, Wario receives an additional life and the counter starts again.

There are also very rare big hearts that give Wario 3 extra lives. For example, there is a secret boss who, after defeating him, gives the player 5 of these big hearts.

Playing

At the end of the game you have to fight the pirate leader Captain Syrup, who calls a lamp ghost for help. After defeating the lamp ghost, the statue of Princess Peach appears, but Mario immediately transports it away. However, Wario was able to chase away the lamp from Captain Syrup and therefore calls the ghost himself so that it fulfills his longed for a castle. For this, however, the mind demands cash.

All coins and treasures are then settled. Depending on how much money the lamp spirit receives, Wario's new home will turn out differently. In the worst case, all he gets is a bird house , in the best case a planet . However, the player only receives the latter if he has found all the hidden treasures in the game. In the following Wario games, however, it is not the planet but the castle, the second best option, that is included in the plot.
