The Tour des Finances ( Dutch : Financietoren , German : Finanz-Turm ) is a skyscraper in the northern quarter of the Belgian capital, Brussels . It was designed by the architects Hugo Van Kuyck, Marcel Lambrichs and Léon Stynen. With a height of 145 m, it is the second tallest building in Belgium after the Tour du Midi .
history
The finance tower is part of a plan to simplify government administration. The aim was to group the administrations of the state in order to increase productivity. The location was chosen primarily because of its proximity to the main train station .
The tower is on a place with a height difference of more than 13 meters. From 1968 to 1972, basic and structural analyzes were carried out to a depth of 26 meters to ensure the stability of the structure. Furthermore, the watery clay soil and the railway tunnel of the north-south connection made construction work on the building difficult . The tower was finally opened at the end of 1983. The outer skin of the former elevator core, which was on the outside of the building until the renovation in 2005, should have a marble facade , but this idea was discarded because of the high costs.
Up to 4600 employees can work in the building.
In front of the entrance to the building is a sculpture that caused slight controversy among the Belgian population as it shows two women embracing naked.
