Tout-rien , English title All-Nothing , is a Canadian animated short film directed by Frédéric Back in 1980.

action

Mother earth creates the mammals and gives them fur, the birds and gives them their plumage and the fish that she gives scales to. The last thing that emerges is a couple of people who are naked. Mother Earth gives them the scales of the fish and both people live in the water, but are not satisfied with it. Mother Earth now gives them the skin of mammals, but people sweat too much in it. You will now receive the birds' plumage and will happily start building a nest and breeding. Their weight breaks the branch of the tree and both people fall to the ground and complain loudly. Resigned, Mother Earth lets them get naked again and only gives them the hair on their heads. Angry, the man kills Mother Earth with a spear. All animals are hunted and the skins are processed into clothing. Humans become more and more immoderate until suddenly there is no more life on earth except them. The children of mankind come to their senses, take off their fur clothing and give the hunted animals their lives again. Mother Earth is also coming to life again.

production

Tout-rien was Frédéric Back's sixth animated film and the first to receive an Oscar nomination. The title goes back to Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz 's story about the soldier , which Igor Stravinsky set to music as Histoire du soldat .

Back began working on the film in 1978. It took 20 months to complete. The film was made with colored pencils on so-called “frosted cels ”. H. Animated foils with a roughened surface and pastels on construction paper. It was the first time Back drew on frosted cels; he perfected the drawing technique in his subsequent films.

Awards

Tout-rien was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1981, but could not prevail against Die Fliege .
