Toxicodendron rydbergii ( English western poison ivy ) is a species of the sumac family. It isnative tomost of Canada from the Maritime Provinces to British Columbia and most of the Continental United States, with the exception of the southeast, as well as New Jersey , Delaware and California .

In contrast to the climbing poison sumac ( Toxicodendron radicans , English eastern poison ivy ), which often occurs as a climbing plant, Toxicodendron rydbergii is a shrub about one, rarely three meters in height. The leaves are triply pinnate (trifoliolate) and alternate . The leaflets are variable in size and shape. They are usually six inches long and turn yellow or orange in the fall. The leaflets facing each other on the threefold leaves are typically asymmetrical , in contrast to the terminal leaflet, which is always bilaterally symmetrical . The fruits are small, round and yellowish.
ecology
The species can be found in forests and wooded areas, usually near streams and rivers.
All parts of the plant contain urushiole , which can cause severe allergic eczema in most people .
