Toy Soldiers is a song by Martika from the year 1989 , the Michael and Jay was written by her. It appeared on the album Martika .

history

In an episode of VH1's pop-up video , Martika revealed that she was inspired by a friend Michael Jay, who was battling cocaine addiction , when she wrote the text .

The address later became retrospective as neither Martika nor Columbia Records was calling for an "anti-drug reputation". In reality, the song is a " teen love song " about a relationship between a girl and a "bad" boy.

At the time of publication, the number of youth drug addicts was growing and the AIDS crisis also played a major role.

The publication took place on January 21, 1989. The pop ballad became a number one hit in the United States and New Zealand .

In 2009, the song reached number 67 in VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s , as Martika usually only landed in the top 40. Most recently, the song landed at number 30.
