The Toynbee Glacier is a 27 km long and 8 km wide glacier on Alexander I Island west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It flows from Mount Stephenson in a northerly direction between the Douglas Range in the west and Mount Tyrrell and Mount Tilley in the east to George VI Sound .
The first aerial photos of the glacier were taken in 1937 during the British Graham Land Expedition under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . The Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) carried out a survey in 1948. It is named after Patrick Arnold Toynbee (1920–1964), an FIDS pilot on Stonington Island from 1948 to 1949.
