As a forwarder , forwarder , forwarder tractor or short forwarder is in harvesting a vehicle designated the harvested wood back from the stock, recharge and navigable truck to the forest path can transport. In contrast to the skidder , which can be regarded as the successor to the back horse , a forwarder can also collect the tree trunks on its transport frame or trailer and then transport them away completely. Forwarders are often used to move logs. These wood sections can be machined in fixed lengths by harvestersor (nowadays rather seldom) made manually by a forest worker. A forwarder can load up to 18 tons of wood.

The partially six-wheeled, but mostly eight-wheeled vehicle is equipped with an articulated steering system and a tandem axle (two tandem axles on 8-wheeled machines) in order to achieve maximum off-road mobility and maneuverability. The hydraulic system is usually filled with biodegradable oil. The machines are equipped with low profile tires up to 100 cm wide. The tires are specially made for forestry use and are intended to reduce soil compaction caused by the heavy vehicles. In addition, bogie bands can be attached to the pairs of tires , the appearance of which is reminiscent of the chains of tracked vehicles , but the functional principle is more like that of a snow chain .

A large number of spotlights attached to the upper edge of the cabin, shining in different directions, enable work in the dark. The forwarder usually has an air-conditioned cabin with a vibration-damped driver's seat, from which the vehicle and the up to 10 m long crane arm are controlled. The rear part of the vehicle is equipped with a stake trolley or a transport basket. Clamp benches with which delimbed or whole trees (long wood) are moved (transported to the forest path) are less common. Under certain circumstances, the forwarder is equipped with an additional pounding shield , which can be used to move trunk sections at the wood storage area, level or remove obstacles on the tramlines, and embark on logging lane exits onto deeper forest paths. For use with hand-cut wood, cable winches are often attached to deliver to the skidding lane.

Special hillside forwarders have as many groomers a winch with rotating arm on the roof to get yourself to go up at a fixed point the slope and let down.

Working method

The forwarder works from the return path , the z. B. the wood harvesters (harvester) has created during the thinning. The problem is the heavy weight of the fully loaded forwarder. The soil compaction by a loaded forwarder is significantly higher than with a wood harvester. Especially fine-pored floors can be damaged by improper traffic. The consequences are waterlogging, decreasing soil aeration , mechanical root damage and impaired growth at the site. The driver should follow the lanes very closely. On the one hand, the brushwood cushions of the stripped branches are on the back alleys , which protect the soil, on the other hand, the soil compaction is concentrated on certain areas. Wide tires reduce the ground pressure , as does the tightening of tapes on the tires (so-called bogie tapes). Vehicles with eight wheels can carry more weight because the weight is better distributed over eight wheels. With slope forwarders, a certain part of the load is taken over by the winch rope which is attached above (often on several trees).

In Scandinavia, the capital-intensive machines are often operated in three shifts , seven days a week; in Germany, two-shift operation is common.

Forwarder championships

The competitions consist of three disciplines: end use, thinning, tower construction. The championships are open to harvester and forwarder drivers from Germany and all European countries.
