The Train Simulator (originally under the name RailWorks published) is a railway simulator for the PC, which appeared in its first version on June 12 of 2009. It was developed by the British development studio RailSimulator.com Ltd (today Dovetail Games) based on the Rail Simulator and brought to market. A new, slightly adapted version of the game appears on Steam every year.

The current version is the Train Simulator 2020 .

For the Train Simulator there is a large number of payware and freeware extensions from various providers, which mainly add new trains and rail routes from all over the world to the game.

Gameplay

The player takes control of a locomotive with the mouse, the keyboard or the controller . The game contains various scenarios that can be selected, in which the player is supposed to successfully simulate certain railway operations (loading passengers or freight, maneuvering, driving to a destination, etc.). These scenarios are distributed over the routes and vehicles included in the game. There is both a standard and a career mode . In career mode, the player receives points, depending on the quality of his task fulfillment, which are comparable to friends and other players worldwide. There is also a Quick Drive mode in which the player can freely decide on route section, vehicle, time and weather.

There are various adjustable camera perspectives from which the player-controlled train can be seen.

The realism and difficulty of the controls depends on the skill and needs of the player. There is a simplified control, which reduces the train to the basic functions, and a complex control, up to the simulation of train control systems like PZB or Sifa . It is possible to switch on or off supporting HUDs , which for example provide information about the speed of the train, the position of the brake levers or the distance to the next signal in a simplified form.

criticism

The DLC policy of the company Dovetail Games, which also makes chargeable extensions for the Train Simulator available via Steam , is criticized . The price-performance ratio is poor in view of the scope, quality and errors contained in the extensions. The purchase of all extensions available on Steam costs the player a total of over 3,600 euros. Currently (2018) this value has risen to over 6,100.00 euros. Not least because of the addition of Marketplace Addons and the so-called Pro Range, which, according to the product descriptions, was "developed for all full-blooded train simulator enthusiasts".
