Transit is a German band that mainly plays song-like rock .

history

Transit was initiated at the end of 1973 by Egon Linde ( vocals , guitar ) and Siegfried Scholz ( keyboard ). In 1974 the founding line-up was complete with Linde, Scholz, Michael Behm ( drums ), Peter Schewe ( bass ) and saxophonist Sdravko Kunev. While Linde and Scholz are with the band to this day, there have been numerous changes to the line-up in the other positions. After Behm, Winfried Reichelt, Detlef Herm, Lutz Krüger, Tom Müller and Hans-Jürgen Beier played as drummers at Transit, as bassists Frank Görke, Ulrich Schauf, Henry Roeder, Manfred Hecht, Jörg Dobersch and Peter Kipp, and as saxophonist Frank Schönfeld.

With its numerous ballads , the music of Transit was strongly reminiscent of the songs by Udo Lindenberg at the time , especially since Linden's singing style was very similar to Lindenberg's style. In contrast to this, however, Linde comes from the coast - the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast - so that references in the lyrics to life on the coast were more obvious than with Lindenberg. Mecklenburg and the Baltic Sea coast were often the themes of the songs by Transit (for example in Ich drive to the coast , a 1975 hit, Zelten from 1976, storm surge from 1979, Die Insel from 1980 and Winter an der See from 1984).

Another special feature of the group was a pronounced interest in historical and legendary content, which is expressed in titles such as Bernsteinhexe , Hildebrandslied (both 1980), Jona (1981) and Ritter Kahlbutz (1982), and finally in the 45-minute rock suite Klaus Störtebeker peaked in 1982. The playwright Peter Hacks contributed some lyrics.

Egon Linde as the GDR counterpart to Udo Lindenberg

Transit became known throughout the GDR mainly because of the voice of the lead singer Linde, which clearly reminded of Udo Lindenberg - the first, extremely successful production by the group Ich fahr an die kueste had musical and lyrical parallels to the Lindenberg title Hoch im North of his second LP thumb up in the wind . Logically, in the wake of the brief cultural-political thaw in the mid-1970s ( World Festival 1973), those responsible for culture in the GDR became aware of the group, as this offered an opportunity to direct the desire of the rock-loving youngsters for artists from the West to a local band. The band could only be right, and so in the period that followed, songs in typical Lindenberg style such as The Boy Sitting on the Shore (1977) and A Girl Like You (1982) can be found in their repertoire again and again .

Boycott of appearance and preliminary end

After Udo Lindenberg had published his song Sonderzug nach Pankow in 1983 and thus initially fell out of favor with the GDR cultural bureaucracy, his epigones were no longer promoted. Transit was no longer allowed to play at major events, concerts that had already been planned were canceled by the organizers and the release of the rock suite that had already been produced by Klaus Störtebeker was stopped. Until 1989 Linde and Scholz gave concerts in clubs as a duo. Then the two musicians ended their careers for the time being due to lack of success.

Egon Linde began composing theater and ballet music in his studio: for the Volkstheater Rostock Little Mermaid and for the theater in Cottbus Mein Kampf . A children's ballet for the Brandenburger Theater in Brandenburg an der Havel followed. With the turnaround , earnings went to zero. In 1993 Linde founded a company that sold aluminum-glass structures. Most of the time, however, Linde was a professional skipper on her own yacht.

A small label released in 1997 the 1982 broadcast of the GDR produced Störtebeker suite at BMG was published in 1998 a Best Of - Compilation , and finally the CD was 2004 winter on the lake released.

comeback

At the beginning of 2009, Transit got together again on the initiative of Lutz Krüger. On June 12th, 2009 the band performed together again for the first time. Electric bass player Jörg Dobersch has been a member of Transit since July 2011, later replaced by Peter Kipp.
