The crested torch lily ( Kniphofia uvaria ), also called grape torch lily or grape tritome , is a type of plant from the genus of torch lilies ( Kniphofia ) in the subfamily of the Affodil family (Asphodelaceae). The species is profuse, especially after fires.

The crested torch lily is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights of 50 to 120 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The gray-green, upright, runny and keeled leaves are 6 to 15 (18) millimeters wide and up to 130 centimeters long. The leaf margin is rough. The flower stalks are 3 to 6 millimeters long during the flowering period (1.5). The inflorescence stalk becomes 80 to 120 centimeters high. The ear cluster is elongated and is up to 20 centimeters long and 10 centimeters thick. The buds and blooming flowers are red and 28 to 40 millimeters long. The lower flowers are yellow in color and have reddish bracts emerging from the axils. The stamens are enclosed or hardly protrude.

The flowering period probably extends from July to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Occurrence

The crested torch lily occurs in South Africa in the Cape Province in swamps and on stream banks at altitudes from 0 to 1800 meters.

The crested torch lily is used as an ornamental plant. The species has been in culture since 1687.
