Travis E. d'Arnaud (born February 10, 1989 in Long Beach , California ) is an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . He made his debut with the New York Mets and currently plays with the Atlanta Braves in the position of catcher .

Career

Minor league

Travis d'Arnaud was elected 37th overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 2007 MLB Draft . He previously played high school baseball with the Lakewood Lancers , the baseball team at Lakewood High School in Lakewood , California . In 2007 he played 41 games for the Gulf Coast League Phillies , the Phillies ' rookie-level minor league team. For the 2008 season he was upgraded to the Williamsport Crosscutters at Short-Season A-Level , where he was used 48 times. At the end of the season he got his first 16 appearances at the A-Level with the Lakewood BlueClaws .

The entire 2009 season d'Arnaud continued to play with the BlueClaws . After 126 games there was a batting average of 24.1% and he was able to achieve 71 RBI and 13 home runs .

For the 2010 season d'Arnaud was part of a ten-player swap deal with the Toronto Blue Jays , in which, among other things, Roy Halladay moved to the Phillies in return. d'Arnaud played for the advanced A-Team of the franchise, the Dunedin Blue Jays , in which he played 71 games and scored 38 RBI.

In 2011 he made the jump to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats , who play at Double-A level in the Eastern League. This season he was able to improve noticeably compared to his first years and ended the season with a batting average of 31.1%. He hit 21 home runs, contributed 78 RBI and scored 72 runs himself .

This was followed by the leap into the triple-A team to the Las Vegas 51s for the 2012 season, in which he was able to improve again and set up his career best in the minor leagues with a batting average of 33.3%.

In December 2012, the Blue Jays handed d'Arnaud together with Noah Syndergaard , John Buck and Wuilmer Becerra to the New York Mets . In return, RA Dickey , Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas came to Canada from New York. Within a very short time, d'Arnaud went through three minor league teams of the Mets in 2013, the Gulf Coast League Mets , Binghamton Mets and again the Las Vegas 51s. The latter changed their affiliation from organizing the Blue Jays to the Mets franchise for the 2013 season. In August 2013, d'Arnaud was first appointed to the Mets MLB squad.

Major League

d'Arnaud made his debut on August 17, 2013 in an 8-2 away defeat against the San Diego Padres and came to 31 missions in the 2013 MLB season . On August 25, 2013, d'Arnaud scored his first major league home run in a 3-11 home loss to the Detroit Tigers .

d'Arnaud was part of the starting grid on the opening day of the 2014 season . With good performances he consolidated his regular place and played 21 of the 26 games in April. On May 13, 2014 d'Arnaud suffered a concussion and was out for 14 games. Upon his return to the team, he showed some weaker games on the offensive and was transferred back to AAA level to the 51s. On June 24th he was recalled to the MLB team. At the end of the season, d'Arnaud played in 139 of the 162 Mets regular season games, scoring 13 home runs, 32 RBI and an AVG of 24.2%.

At the beginning of the 2015 season , d'Arnaud was again the starting catcher of the Mets. On April 19, he broke his right hand after a hit by pitch and then missed 46 games and did not return until June 10. D'Arnaud was replaced by Kevin Plawecki during his injury . In the eighth mission after d'Arnaud's recovery, he injured himself again when he tried to tag AJ Pierzynski . He then dropped out again for 31 games, so that at the end of the regular season he only made 67 appearances.

Since the Mets won their division, d'Arnaud made his first appearances in the playoffs in 2015. He started as a catcher in all 14 post seasons of the Mets and scored his first play off home run in Game 3 of the 2015 National League Division Series . In the 4-0 sweep against the Cubs in the National League Championship Series 2015 , he was able to repeat this in Game 1 and Game 4. He reached the 2015 World Series with the Mets , which was ultimately lost with 1: 4 games against the Kansas City Royals .

As in the previous two years, d'Arnaud was the first choice as catcher for the Mets at the beginning of the 2016 season , but was thrown back early in the season by another injury. He missed 50 games from April 26 to June 20. He was again replaced by Kevin Plawecki, whose backup catcher position was taken by René Rivera . Since returning to the squad, d'Arnaud has been starting catcher again, Rivera retained the position as a substitute and Plawecki was transferred to the Las Vegas 51s.
