Tribal Tech is the name of a progressive jazz fusion band from Los Angeles , California that was founded in 1984 by guitarist Scott Henderson and bassist Gary Willis and has since led.

The band's musical style is based on blues , jazz and rock . Another important influence is the fusion band Weather Report .

history

The early tribal tech albums ( Spears (1985), Dr. Hee (1987), Nomad (1990)) are characterized by a large line- up with saxophone, flute, percussion, vibraphone, occasionally steel drum and long, sweeping compositions. Looking back on these albums, Scott Henderson says he left his blues roots and tried to sound like a jazz guitarist. However, he positively highlights the compositions and performances of the musicians.

In 1991 keyboardist Scott Kinsey and drummer Kirk Covington became members of the band, and Tribal Tech now played as a quartet . This line-up was first heard on the album Illicit (1992), has remained constant on all subsequent tribal tech albums and is considered the band's “classic” line-up. As of Illicit , the band began touring outside of Los Angeles.

During the 1990s they moved away from the well- composed style of the early albums and gave more space to improvisations . They also wanted to make concerts more dynamic and varied.

The pieces on the album Thick (1999) were ultimately created from jams in the studio and song ideas that the band members brought with them to the recordings. This type of songwriting was then used in Rocket Science (2000) and X (2012).

After the release of the album Rocket Science in 2000, the band broke up and the band members devoted themselves to their own projects. Gary Willis also moved to Spain , which made working together difficult. In 2012, however, they got back together for the recordings of album X and went on tour.

Tribal Tech disbanded again in 2014. Plans for another album and a new line-up for the band with ex- Miles Davis keyboarder Deron Johnson and drummer Gergő Borlai were discarded, as the collaboration was ultimately considered too cumbersome and expensive due to the different places of residence of the band members has been.

Innerviews: Scott Henderson - Roots and branches , "What I don't like about Spears, Nomads and Dr. Hee — the first three Tribal Tech albums — is that although the records have nice compositions and playing, I feel like I left my roots behind on them. I was trying to be a jazz musician and I'm not. [laughs] "
