The Trinity Chapel Sachsendorf is located in the former Patzetz estate , which has belonged to the Sachsendorf municipality since 1928 , which in turn has been a district of Barby in Saxony-Anhalt since 2010 . The building was probably built in the middle of the 11th century.

History and architecture

The Patzetz chapel was built during the Salian era , after the Slavs were driven back from the western Elbe areas by the Franks . The chroniclers assume that the chapel was built around the middle of the 11th century in Romanesque style on a pagan place of worship. Until the Reformation it was used by the monks of the nearby Divine Grace Monastery . Then it obviously fell to the Patzetz domain, because it was not until 1950 that the chapel was transferred back to the parish of Sachsendorf from municipal ownership. In the meantime the chapel was used by the domain tenant as an agricultural storage facility. Plans in the 1930s to convert the building into a National Socialist youth home were not implemented. During the advance of the US Army at the end of World War II , the chapel roof was badly damaged by artillery fire in mid-1945. Since no repairs were made, the building threatened to deteriorate and was only renovated when it was taken over by the parish and rededicated on May 20, 1951. The inauguration date fell on Trinity Sunday , after which the chapel was named.

During the renovation work, a Romanesque archway with a historic cornice was uncovered, the apse on the east side was redesigned and the roof was given a turret. The Magdeburg sculptor Ludwig Göbel created a crucifix based on the Romanesque style for the altar in 1952 .
