The province of Trizinia until 1997

Trizinia ( Greek Επαρχία Τροιζηνίας ) was until 1997 one of the provinces in the prefecture of Piraeus in the Greek region of Attica . It was named after the ancient city of Troizen (neugr. Trizína ). The area is located on the east coast of the Peloponnese peninsula , practically an Attic enclave in the Peloponnese region . The main town was the city of Poros on the island of the same name. With the administrative reform of 2010 , Trizinia was re-created as the municipality of Trizinia-Methana by merging the municipalities of Methana and Trizina , but Poros remained independent.

history

From 1833 Trizinia was one of six provinces in the prefecture of Argolis and Corinth ( Greek Νόμος Αργολίδας και Κορινθίας ). It was formed from the former Damala (Trizina) district and the island of Poros. The main town was Poros City. A year later, the province is also called Kalauria ( Greek Επαρχία Καλαυρείας ). In 1836 Greece was divided into 30 administrative districts (governorates). Here the province of Trizinia was assigned to the administrative district of Argolis ( Greek Διοίκησις Αργολίδος ). The island of Poros was added to the Hydra administrative district. The next change was made at the end of 1836. The provinces of Trizinia and Hermione were united to form the sub-government of Hermione and Trizinia ( Greek Υποδιοίκησις Έρμιονιδος καί Τροιυηνλίας ). In 1938 Trizinia was also added to the Hydra County.

In 1845 they returned to the original division of the country. The province of Trizinia was re-established within the prefecture of Argolis and Corinth. Later it was united with the province of Hydra to the province of Hydra and Trizinia ( Greek Επαρχία Ύδρας και Τροιζηνίας ). It consisted of the municipalities of Hydra, Trizina, Methana and Driopi with Hydra City as the administrative center. Before 1908 there was again an independent province of Trizinia within the prefecture of Argolis. In 1925 Trizinia was assigned to the prefecture of Attica and consisted of the municipality of Trizina with the places Ano Fanari , Trizina (also called Damalas), Galatas , Dryopi with Kaloni, Karatzas, Taktikoupolis with Metamorfosi, the municipality of Poros and the municipality of Methana . In 1964 Trizinia was assigned to the newly established prefecture of Piraeus .

Economy and Transport

The area around Trizina is mainly characterized by agriculture. This is how you grow a lot of olives, lemons and oranges. Viticulture also has a certain importance. The designation of origin Trizinia ( Greek Τροιζηνία ) for olive oil was protected by the European Union . Tourism has been declining for about 20 years and is concentrated on the island of Poros and the adjacent island of Kalavria . These are an important local recreation area for the residents of the greater Athens area .

Important transport links are the road from Trachia to Galatas and the road from Galatas to Ermioni and Kranidi. The connection from Epidaurus to Kaloni planned since 1984 is still under construction. The ship connections from Piraeus to Methana and Poros are more important than the land connection. Large ferries run regularly to facilitate traffic with Piraeus.

The landscape of the region is characterized by the mountain range of the Aderes Mountains (also called Tembeleni in Albanian) and the volcanic (half) islands of Aegina , Methana and Poros.
