features

Macroscopic features

The entire lichen - even in the cup - has a finely floury, soured surface. The basal, gray-greenish leaves are small and often only sparsely present. The hollow, about 2 centimeters long, light gray to slightly greenish stems ( podiums ) of the lichen end quite suddenly in cup-shaped to funnel-shaped cups. These are up to about 4 mm wide and are noticeably even.

Spot reaction

Thallus scales and podia change color when para-phenylenediamine is sprinkled red (P +).

Distribution and location

Cladonia fimbriata is very common and occurs throughout Europe on sandy and sandy-loamy soils. Sometimes it also grows on rotten wood or at the base of tree trunks in bright, light-rich locations.
