The Regatta Transat BPE (before 2009: Trophée BPE , after 2009: Transat Bénodet-Martinique ) is a biennial conducted offshore race without stopovers whose route begins in France. From 2001 it led first as a regatta for two-man teams to Dakar ( Senegal ), with a stopover in Porto Santo ( Madeira ); Since 2005, it's a one-handed - transatlantic race in the Caribbean .

The boats of the Figaro Bénéteau unit class are used for sailing . BPE (Banque Privée Européenne) was the main sponsor until 2009. In those years the regatta was named after her.

The regatta is traditionally strongly dominated by French sailors. Although some sailors from other nations also take part, all the medals up to 2010 went to French.

history

From 1980 to 1991, the La Baule-Dakar regatta was held every three to four years . Their route led from the French La Baule (Atlantic coast) to Dakar, with the sailors having to sail between the Azores islands of Faial and Pico . In 1980 and 1983 the competition was advertised as a regatta for (larger) teams, in 1987 for teams of two and in 1991 for single-handed sailors.

François-Xavier Dehaye and his company Match Racing (a subsidiary of Pen Duick SAS , the organizer of the transatlantic regattas Route du Rhum and Transat Jacques Vabre ) continued this regatta tradition with the creation of the BPE Trophy . The regatta was supported by the city of Saint-Nazaire .

While the 2001 regatta was still open for single and multi-hull boats, from 2003 only boats of the one- class type Figaro Bénéteau 2 were used.

From 2005 the regatta was carried out as a one-handed transatlantic regatta to the Caribbean, in the first year to Cuba. Then the regatta, possibly based on the song Belle-île en Mer, Marie galante by the French singer Laurent Voulzy , was carried out on the same route - from Belle-île -en-Mer (Brittany) to Marie-Galante (Guadeloupe, Antilles) ; Saint-Nazaire withdrew from the regatta, instead, among other things, Belle-Île-en-Mer became a sponsor. After the main sponsor BPE withdrew and the start and finish points changed, the 2011 regatta was called Transat Bénodet – Martinique .
