Truth Hurts is a song by the US singer Lizzo from 2017. The song was originally conceived as a standalone single, but was subsequently added to the deluxe edition of their third studio album, Cuz I Love You .

background

Although Truth Hurts was released in 2017, it only developed into a big hit in the USA 2 years after its release and entered the charts there for the first time on May 18, 2019, initially at number 50. The success grew in the months that followed always on and made the interpreter a well-known term. The song's sudden, unexpected popularity can be traced back to several reasons occurring in quick succession. First there was a video showing Lizzo after styling her hair with the words "bye, bitch!" shouts, went viral on the Internet and got her first attention - but initially not as a musician. Shortly afterwards, the text fragment from Truth Hurts , "I just took a DNA test, turns out I'm 100% ...", became a popular template for memes , in which users read the last part of the line (in the original "that bitch Replace ") with your own words. The song was also used in the trailer   and a scene from the film Something Great . All this ensured that the title, since it was found on the music streaming platform Spotify , continued to grow in popularity and helped the artist to several prestigious appearances, which further cemented her status.

After its belated success set in, Truth Hurts was also the subject of a legal battle over the authorship of the title. Specifically, it was about the above-mentioned line of text, which became an internet phenomenon. Brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen claimed to have been present in an early songwriting session of the song and contributed the phrase. Lizzo, in turn, stated that only she and Ricky Reed were in the room during the writing process and that she was inspired to write the line by an Instagram meme. She later learned that the said post was based on a tweet by user Mina Lioness , and retrospectively named her the official co-author.

Music and lyrics

Truth Hurts is a pop song with elements of hip hop . Striking the song is its simple, consistently played piano motif and his melodic chanting . These elements are underlaid by a beat of Trapgenres consisting of 808 - bass drums , hi-hats and snares there. The text of the song is about the fact that after the end of a love affair , which came about when her significant other returned to his ex-girlfriend, the interpreter progresses and does not want to commit in the future. She celebrates being single and refuses to be just a rival .

Music video

The video clip for Truth Hurts shows Lizzo at her wedding while she waits for her groom . She is wearing a white wedding dress and a bridal bouquet . She is married by a shirtless man in a hat . In between there are several cuts to the guests, the reactions of which differ greatly: some cry while others happily jump around. Suddenly a woman gets up from her seat and begins to argue with the bride. It then disappears from the video. At the end of the clip it becomes apparent that the supposed bridegroom she has been waiting for is her likeness. So she is happiest with herself. In scenes that are repeatedly faded in, she sits, also in white, but more revealingly , on a bench in a room, directly in front of the curtains , or together with two other women on a bed , always moving rhythmically. A celebration that apparently takes place after the wedding is also shown several times. Many balloons can be seen on this and the ambience is bathed in pink light. There is an exuberant atmosphere in all of these scenes.

criticism

Truth Hurts received positive reviews. The positive messages of the song were praised, as well as the clever humor that the artist proves. One could identify with the described situation of being abandoned, and Lizzo would win us over in these moments of honesty. Her attitude has been extolled: she knows that she expects honesty from men, and even if they misbehave, she would still be "100% that bitch," as she sings. She admits she has her difficulties with the male sex, but solves them in her own way. They were also happy that she emphasized that she had no problem with being single.

success

In the US, Truth Hurts was a huge commercial success. After entering the Billboard Hot 100 2 years after it was first released, it went on to become a number one hit over the course of the year, holding the top spot for 7 weeks. It was awarded double platinum there. He also managed to climb into the top ten in Canada (7th place) and New Zealand (5th place). In the rest of the world it was comparatively moderate; In the German-speaking countries it was hardly noticed: in the German and Austrian charts it could not prove itself at all, in Switzerland it only ranks 94th.
