Trypan red is a derivative of the red azo dye benzopurpurine .

history

In 1901 Paul Ehrlich tested over 100 synthetic dyes for their effect against the pathogen Trypanosoma equinum , which causes Mal de Caderas disease in solipeds , and Trypanosoma brucei , which causes Nagana . The only substance that showed trypanocidal activity was nagana red , a benzopurpurine . However, the efficiency was poor, presumably due to the low water solubility . In 1903 Ludwig Benda von der Cassella Farbwerke was commissioned by Ehrlich to synthesize Trypan red as a more water-soluble derivative of Nagana red with an additional sulfonic acid group . This substance is effective against Trypanosoma equinum , but not against other trypanosomes .
