Chernobyl aid associations in Germany
Chernobyl aid associations are usually non-profit organizations that provide support to people in the contaminated areas of Belarus and Ukraine .
Emergence
As a result of the Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986, large parts of Ukraine and Belarus were contaminated by the radioactive cloud that had formed . Aid associations were established in the course of the 1990s. Many of the founding members were either themselves in the affected areas or followed the example of other associations.
activities
Many German clubs take in children from the contaminated regions over the summer months . Depending on the club, there are children between the ages of 8 and 16. In the three to four week period, the children's immune system is built up to such an extent that they can live "normally" for around two years. In addition, donations in cash and in kind are made all year round . a. for medical care in the clinics.
Some associations also concentrate their relief work on development work and relocation in Belarus.
Since the contamination took place mainly in Belarus, the aid from Germany is also more concentrated in this area.
aims
The goals of the associations are to a large extent the development work and support of the regions, which were hit very hard by the disaster .
Since the catastrophe has been more and more forgotten in the past few years , the clubs are also working against forgetting among the population.
