history

In 1856 an area was branched off from Coolbaugh Township and named Tunkhannock Township . The name is based on the expression of tank-hanne the aboriginal and means "little river". The area is swampy and wooded. The first settlers were therefore primarily active in the timber industry. Several sawmills were put into operation. From the 1890s onwards, bear moss plants ( Lycopodium ) were grown on a large scale and sold as miniature Christmas trees or made into ropes. The main attraction of the township today is the Pocono Raceway , located in the area, where races of the NASCAR series are held annually.
