The Tunnel de l'Étoile is a road tunnel in the French capital Paris , which connects the Avenue des Champs-Élysées with the Avenue de la Grande Armée underneath the Place Charles-de-Gaulle and passes under the Arc de Triomphe .

The 380 meter long and 8 meter wide tunnel was opened to traffic in 1970 as a one-way street with two lanes from east to west. It served as a useful shortcut along the historical axis of sight, Ax historique , to relieve the accident-prone roundabout at Place Charles-de-Gaulle. To the left and right of the 3.20 meter wide lanes, 75 cm wide footpaths were built for emergencies. The tunnel runs directly parallel to the Passage du Souvenir , via which pedestrians get to the Arc de Triomphe.

The entrance to the tunnel was the trigger for many car accidents, as it has a clearance height of just 2.40 m. Again and again buses or trucks ignored the signal lights, collided with the tunnel ceiling and damaged the structure. The tunnel was therefore temporarily closed in March 2015 and the effects on the traffic situation were observed. The closure was initially extended several times and the reopening was then canceled because new safety regulations for car tunnels over 300 meters were no longer met, especially with regard to ventilation. It was also asbestos in the joints found the wall paneling.

In the following years there were demands to open the tunnel to pedestrians and cyclists , and permanent use as a cinema or luxury shopping center was suggested. In 2017 the tunnel was used as a flight route for the drone festival . In 2018, the reconstruction of the tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians was announced. In addition, access to the triumphal arch is to be improved for people with physical disabilities . During the COVID-19 pandemic in France , pop-up cycle lanes were laid out in Paris and the expansion of the network accelerated. In May 2020, the tunnel was opened as part of a safe bike connection between Porte Maillot in the west and Place de la Concorde in the east.
