The forest covers 2,233 hectares (5,519 acres) and is one of the forests that has never been used for agricultural purposes. The forest extends around the Barkhamsted Reservoir , which is operated by MDC (Metropolitan District Commission) , a drinking water service provider, and borders the Granville State Forest in Massachusetts . In the western part of the forest run Howells Brook ( Thorne Brook ), which forms ponds in several places and which also drains the Hartland Pond (no longer in the park area), and the Brook Falls . In the eastern part of the forest, on the opposite side of the Barkhamstead Reservoir, run among others Hurricane Brook , Roberts Brook , and Roaring Brook . There is a "letterbox" at Hurricane Brook . The highest peaks in the western forest area are Booth Hill at 1,350 ft (411 m) and Morrison Hill at 1,200 ft (370 m) above sea level . The Barkhamstead Reservoir lies in a steeply sloping valley at a height of 41 m.

Connecticut is close to the Charles Arnold Recreation Area , Peoples State Forest, and Enders State Forest . Therefore, the area is an important refuge for wildlife such as elk and black bear .
