Turgen ( Kazakh Түрген ) is a municipality in Kazakhstan and belongs to the Audany Jengbekschiqasaq .
geography
Spatial location
The village lies at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. East of the village flows the river of the same name, Turgenka , which rises in the nearby high mountains and flows into the river Ili .
Neighboring municipalities / cities
On the other side of the Turgenka River, about 2 km away is Karakimir . To the west is the district town of Jessik in about 12 km and in the same direction the former capital Almaty is 60 km away.
history
The settlement of was founded in the 19th century.
In 1864 Russian Cossacks founded the village "Michailowskoje" (Михайловское). Construction of the village began with the construction of the Church of the Archangel Michael (Михайловского).
In 1921 the village was renamed Turgen.
Culture and sights
theatre
In 1981 the House of Culture (Дом Культуры) was built in the center of the village and has been used for concerts and performances ever since.
Buildings
A veterans memorial was erected in the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
The state repair shop was the largest employer from 1959 to the end of the 1990s and in 1990 employed around 1,000 people. When the economy collapsed in the late 1990s, the plant also fell into disrepair and was closed.
