The Turmhügelburg Trögen is an abandoned hilltop castle complex on a hilltop in the Trögen district of the city of Hardegsen in southern Lower Saxony . The weir system was created in the Middle Ages by filling in a castle hill and was used as a tower hill castle (Motte).

description

Access to the castle hill via a wooden walkway that has since collapsed (2009)

The moth is located on the castle hill about 500 meters south of Trögen near the Ludwigshöhe settlement. Below in the west flows the Espolde . The plateau on the castle hill has the dimensions of about 15 by 25 meters. It is secured to the south and east with two semicircular moats lying one behind the other, about 10 meters wide and three to five meters deep. Since the terrain slopes steeply to the Espolde valley, no protection was required to the northwest and southwest. On a 30 x 40 meter ledge west of the castle hill there was probably an unpaved outer bailey . The castle plateau was possibly built on with a tower-like building made of stone or wood, of which no remains can be found. The earlier access is not recognizable. An access built today via a wooden walkway has since collapsed due to mold rot .

There are no historical records of the fortifications, so nothing is known about their builders and users or their former function. During inspections in the castle area, ceramic shards were found that can be dated to the 11th and 12th centuries and give an indication of the period of use. Towards the end of the 18th century, the complex was thought to be a robber baron castle of the noblemen of Bovenden , which is probably a legend . Today the weir system is considered to be one of the best preserved hill towers in southern Lower Saxony.
