Sarmingstein tower ruin

The Sarmingstein tower ruins are the remains of a bastion in the Sarmingstein district of St. Nikola an der Donau in the Perg district , Upper Austria , which was used to monitor Hauderer-Strasse and the Danube , which was built at the beginning of the 16th century .

history

The still existing round tower was built in 1488 by order of Emperor Friedrich III. Erected by the Prueschenk brothers. In 1513 the burgrave Heinrich Prueschenk had to cede the tower to Waldhausen , he himself mostly stayed in Greinburg . On the orders of King Ferdinand I , the fortress was given bastions in 1538 by Provost Conrad von Waldhausen . It served as a replacement for Werfenstein Castle , which had already become a ruin and was then used to monitor the Danube . The tower formed the northern corner of the bastion, which later served as a ship master's house and was renovated in 1602 under Provost Partenreuter von Stift Waldhausen. The tower and side walls blocked the street. In the 17th century, the building, which had become inoperable, became a ruin.

On the occasion of the construction of the Donauuferbahn at the beginning of the 20th century, the tower was badly damaged by blasting and had to be demolished halfway. The inside of the tower was filled with the material. In 2013, parts of the tower collapsed onto the tracks of the Donauuferbahn. For security reasons, some of the houses below were no longer allowed to be inhabited and Donau Strasse ( B 3 ) was closed for several weeks until the investigations were completed and security measures were taken .

meaning

The tower is one of the last surviving medieval toll towers on the Danube, can also be found in the Sarmingstein market coat of arms and is used as a touristic observation tower .
