The saffron mallow family (Turneroideae) are a subfamily in the plant family of the passion flower family (Passifloraceae) within the order of the Malpighia-like (Malpighiales). The ten genera with a total of around 205 species thrive in the tropics and subtropics in Africa and the Neotropics .

They are annual or perennial herbaceous plants or woody plants. The plants should smell unpleasant. The alternate leaves are simple and serrated or deeply divided. Small stipules may be present or absent.

The hermaphroditic, radially symmetrical flowers are five-fold and sometimes heterostyle. The five sepals are fused. The five petals are fused. Two or three carpels are fused to form an upper or semi- lower ovary.

There are fruit capsules formed. The many seeds have an aril on one side .

Saffron mallow family can be found in the Neotropic and Africa .

Systematics

The genera of the former Turneraceae family were incorporated into the Passifloraceae family according to APG III . The name Turneroideae was introduced in 1836 by Eaton in Bot. Dict. , 4th edition, p. 44 first published. The surname Turneraceae was published by Carl Sigismund Kunth in Augustin Pyrame de Candolle .
