history

The London and South Western Railway (L & SWR) took a railway line into operation on January 1, 1869, which branched off the West London Line at Addison Road (now Kensington (Olympia) ) and led to Richmond . Turnham Green station opened on the same day. The Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of the District Line) built a connecting line from the then terminus Hammersmith to the L & SWR tracks just east of Ravenscourt Park . On June 1, 1877, the MDR metros operated for the first time, followed exactly four months later by the Metropolitan Railway (MR; today's Metropolitan Line) this example.

From February 1, 1894, suburban trains of the Great Western Railway (GWR) also ran on the route, which was now used by four different companies. After the electrification of the MDR line north of Acton Town in 1903, the MDR funded the electrification of the section over Turnham Green, which was completed on July 1, 1905. Trains from L & SWR, MR and GWR continued to run on steam locomotives.

The MR withdrew on December 31, 1906, the GWR exactly four years later. The L & SWR, which in 1911 had built parallel tracks for non-electric traffic, finally had to bow to subway competition on June 3, 1916. When the Piccadilly Line was extended westward from Hammersmith on July 4, 1932, the tracks came to lie between those of the District Line. Trains on the Piccadilly Line initially passed Turnham Green station without stopping. Since June 23, 1963, they have been stopping before and after closing time.

The station is, as Turnpike Lane , in the Song Junkie Doll by Mark Knopfler mentioned that on his album Sailing to Philadelphia has been released.
