Sailing to Philadelphia ( Engl. For: " After sailing Philadelphia ") is the second studio album by Mark Knopfler . It was released in 2000. The songs What It Is , Sailing to Philadelphia and Silvertown Blues were released as singles.
background
As with most of Knopfler's albums, Sailing to Philadelphia is about both everyday and historical subjects. The title song, for example, tells the story of the astronomer Charles Mason and the geodesist Jeremiah Dixon , who in 1763 and 1767 measured the so-called Mason-Dixon line , which forms the traditional border between the northern and southern states of the USA . According to an interview, Thomas Pynchon's novel Mason & Dixon Knopfler is said to have inspired the piece.
The song Baloney Again also has a historical background: It is about wandering black priests who want to spread their Christian faith in rural America in 1953, and about the racism they encounter.
