ESL Gaming GmbH in Cologne ( Turtle Entertainment GmbH until August 30, 2019 ) was founded in 2000 and operates in the field of electronic sports . She operates u. a. the Electronic Sports League (ESL), the largest league for computer gamers in Europe and is a subsidiary of the Swedish media group Modern Times Group .

The company also owns the subsidiary Turtle Entertainment TV GmbH, which operates the IPTV channel ESL TV .

Company formation

The company Turtle Entertainment GmbH was founded in September 2000. The founders already had years of experience in the gaming sector at the time they were founded. The company was founded on their vision of developing the Electronic Sports League (ESL), an international ladder and league system that should include numerous games and game modes. With over ten million visits per month and more than two million registered members, the league portal www.play.eslgaming.com is one of the largest websites in Germany today. Turtle Entertainment GmbH acts as a league operator and event organizer in the eSport sector. The company had paid out prize money in the double-digit million range by mid-2016.

Worldwide marketing

With products like the ESL, the company is currently active in 37 countries around the world and has a total of over two million users. Within a very short time, Turtle Entertainment has developed into the European market leader in the field of electronic sports.

Turtle Entertainment's ESL and other eSport leagues are represented worldwide by 15 license partners and a subsidiary. In the booming Asian market, for example, the company created an important pillar for itself at the beginning of 2007 through a joint venture with the Chinese eSport league PGL (ProGamer League).

By participating in GIGA Digital Television GmbH, which is also based in Cologne, Turtle Entertainment has been able to distribute ESL content not only via the ESL league portal, but also via the TV channels GIGA and GIGA 2 since 2006. The participation in GIGA was severely restricted in November 2007, GIGA 2 was discontinued. Since November 15, 2007, Turtle Entertainment has been distributing ESL's content via its own IPTV broadcaster ESL TV; the remaining shares in GIGA were sold to Premiere AG.
