Tushemisht ( Albanian also Tushemishti ) is a village in eastern Albania . It is located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, right on the border with North Macedonia . Thanks to its beach and compact historic village center, Tushemisht is a popular holiday destination.
The village is located at the eastern end of the plain on the south bank of Lake Ohrid at around 700 m above sea level. A. Behind the village rises a 966 m above sea level. A. high hill. Numerous springs emerge in and around Tushemisht - small canals and ponds between the historic houses characterize the place. The ponds of Drilon , a popular excursion destination in the west of the village, are protected as a natural monument . Drilon is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region , which in 2019 was extended to the Albanian part of the lake and some surrounding areas.
The abundance of fresh water enables the residents of Tushemisht to farm and raise fish.
Together with the city of Pogradec five kilometers to the west, Tushemisht forms the center of bathing tourism on Lake Ohrid. The long, flat beach has long attracted summer vacationers who stayed in Tushemisht mainly in private houses. Since the turn of the millennium, small hotels as well as numerous restaurants, cafes and beach bars have sprung up in Tushemisht. The Albanian government has included Tushemisht in the “100 Villages” program, which aims to promote tourism in rural areas.
One and a half kilometers northeast of the village is the border crossing that connects Tushemisht with Sveti Naum in North Macedonia. The national road SH64 leads from Pogradec through Tushemisht to the border.
The church on a small hill in the center of the village is dedicated to St. Pandeleimon .
Until 2015 Tushemisht belonged to the municipality ( komuna ) Buçimas , which was then merged with the Bashkia Pogradec.
The Albanian film Zonja nga qyteti (The Dames from the City) was shot in Tushemisht . A statue in the center of the village, which shows the main character Teto Ollga, played by Violeta Manushi , is reminiscent of the filming of the mid-1970s. The comedy made the village known throughout Albania.
