Tutukaka Harbor is a natural harbor in the Northland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Tutukaka Harbor is located approximately 22 km north east of Whangarei on the east coast of Northland Peninsula . The approximately 1.5 km 2 natural harbor has a length of 1.87 km and a maximum width of 680 m. The port entrance has a width from land to land of around 560 m, but since there are some islands in the entrance area, the passage is reduced to only 190 m. In addition to the rocky islands that narrow the port entrance, the 200 m × 107 m large Philip Island is located fairly centrally in the port area .
You can reach the Tutukaka Harbor a north of Whangarei on New Zealand State Highway 1 east branching road that over Ngunguru leads.
flora
Most of the port area does not go beyond a depth of 5 m. Above all, the edge areas and the bays in the upper half of the natural harbor are silted up or provided with silt deposits . Above all, these shallow water areas are rich in plants. During investigations in 1980, 164 different species were identified, eleven of them first documented in New Zealand.
Marina
At the northwest end of the natural harbor at the settlement of Tutukaka is the 350 m × 235 m large marina, from which sailing trips into the Pacific Ocean are possible.
