Tuulikki Pietila

Ida Helmi Tuulikki Pietilä (born February 18, 1917 in Seattle , USA ; † February 23, 2009 in Helsinki , Finland ) was a Finnish graphic artist and professor.

Pietilä was one of the most influential figures in Finnish graphic art. Her works have been presented to the public in numerous exhibitions. She also worked for a long time as a teacher at the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts and then taught herself graphic arts, about which she wrote many books.

Life

Pietilä began her studies at the drawing school in Turku , which she attended from 1933 to 1936. She continued her education at the School of the Finnish Art Association (1936-1940) and at Konstfack in Stockholm (1945-1949). Most recently she was a student at the Fernand Léger Art Academy in Paris (1949–1953). During her studies she met her future partner Tove Jansson . They worked together on various projects, including with Pentti Eistola of artworks to the Moomins , which in Muumimuseo in Tampere are seen.

Jansson and Pietilä spent a lot of time on the island of Klovharu in Pellinki , where Pietilä created several hours of film material. Some documentaries were made from this. The latest documentaries were Haru, yksinäinen saari (1998) and Tove ja Tooti Euroopassa (2004).

Pietilä's first exhibition took place in Turku in 1935 . Her first solo exhibition was in 1951. From 1967 she took part in the Purnu group summer exhibitions, where she showed a retro-perspective exhibition in 1986. Her works could also be viewed abroad. Pietilä also won several prizes. In 1963 she received the Order of the Lion of Finland for her work . In 1982 she was appointed professor .

Pietilä was the inspiration for the character Tooticki in the Moomin stories. The architect Reima Pietilä was her brother.

Pietilä died at home in Helsinki on February 23, 2009.
