Tymofij Ivanovich Hawryliw ( Ukrainian Тимофій Іванович Гаврилів , also Tymofiy Havryliv ; * 1971 in Ivano-Frankivsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian writer, blogger, translator, literary theorist and columnist.

Works

Hawryliw made his debut as a poet in 1986 and writes poetry, essays, short stories and novels. He published in German-language magazines and anthologies in Germany and Austria; individual works were also published in Polish and Czech.

His novel Where is your house, Odysseus? (German at Ammann Verlag, 2009) describes the situation of a person in the globalizing world, is about the loss of the illusions of an entire generation that struggles for survival in the wake of social, economic and political upheavals and searches for values. Where is your house, Odysseus? is the first part of a novel trilogy, which also includes the novels Magische Welt (original edition in three volumes: Magische Welt. Then , September 2010; Magische Welt. Now , December 2010; Magische Welt. Between then and now , April 2011) and Komm und take belong. In 2016 a revised new edition was published in Ukrainian. In Juniregen (2018), his latest novel, the plot ranges from the period after World War II to the events of recent Ukrainian history - the Maidan and the war. The private stories of representatives of different generations, who are closely intertwined with one another, go hand in hand with the history of the country. The geography of the novel stretches from Archangelsk in northern Russia to Paris, from Dresden to northern Italy, but the main arena is the Ukraine, home to most of the fictional characters and the author. He was awarded literary prizes for his works.

Hawryliw translated works by Ferdinand Raimund , Johann Nepomuk Nestroy , Georg Trakl , Georg Heym , Joseph Roth , Thomas Bernhard , Elfriede Jelinek , Paul Celan , Hermann Broch , Rose Ausländer , Christine Lavant , Hans-Georg Gadamer and others. a. into Ukrainian, which is valued by literary critics alongside his original literary texts, he is the only Ukrainian writer besides Natalka Sniadanko who constantly translates from German.

Literary studies

In the context of his work at the university, he wrote several literary theoretical studies as well as treatises on Austrian literature, including in German: Identities in Austrian Literature of the XX. Century , and on Ukrainian literature. He initiated the opening of the memorial plaques for Georg Trakl in Horodok in 2004 and Joseph Roth in Lviv in 2009 .

Hawryliw lives and works in Lviv.
