Lists on the subject

The Type 03 Chū-SAM ( Japanese 03 式 中 距離 地 対 空 誘導 弾 , maru-san-shiki-chu-kyori-chi-tai-kuu-yuudou-dan , German “Type-03-Middle -Distance- Ground-Air Missile ") is an anti-aircraft missile system in service by the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) from the 2000s. It is used to combat drones , airplanes and helicopters.

history

The development work on the Type 03 Chū-SAM began in 1990 by the Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) in cooperation with the "Mitsubishi Electronics Corporation". Until the first test in 1999, about 10.7 billion was US dollars invested. The Chū-SAM as a medium-range defense system closes the gap between the short-range system Type 81 Tan-SAM and the long-range system MIM-104 Patriot from American production. It gradually replaced the outdated HAWK system from the 1960s, which, after various increases in combat value, was in the service of the armed forces until the 2000s. As part of a performance evaluation at the White Sands Missile Range US missile test site , the Chū-SAM showed outstanding results. A total of ten air targets were successfully fought, including small and fast-flying targets such as the target drone GQM-163 Coyote .

technology

The Chū-SAM air defense system is based on an all-terrain 8 × 8 truck, which is derived from a crane undercarriage model from Kato Works / Mitsubishi Heavy Industries , which is used by various vehicles from the Chū-SAM battery . The Chū-SAM system roughly consists of the following components: A multifunction radar , a fire control station, the guided missile starters and other components for autonomous or combined use, such as transport and charging vehicles and mobile generators for power supply. The rocket launch vehicle transports six missiles stowed in cuboid launch containers. The container with the starting containers must be erected vertically before launch. The reloading is done by a special transport and loading vehicle. The rockets are loaded and unloaded using a hydraulic loading crane at the rear .

Anti-aircraft missile

The anti-aircraft missile of the Chū-SAM has a launch mass of 570 kg. A solid rocket engine accelerates the missile to Mach 2.5. The range is 50 kilometers, the service ceiling is given as ten kilometers. The target location and guidance of the anti-aircraft missiles is carried out with an AESA multi-function radar. This simultaneously carries out the determination of the target data, target tracking and the search for further aerial targets ( track-while-scan ). The radar can simultaneously monitor 100 targets and determine the target data from 12 of them.

In August 2016, the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that an extended version of the anti-aircraft missile called Chū-SAM Kai , which is used in the land-based system, would be used for a long-range ship-based anti-aircraft system.
