The submarine class XVII , officially called the Type XVII , was a German submarine class that was built from 1942 to 1944.
These were single-hulled boats with Walter drives , of which several versions were built or planned.
Type XVIIA was the collective name for the two test types Wa 201 from Blohm & Voss ( U 792 and U 793 ) and Wk 202 from Friedrich Krupp Germania shipyard ( U 794 and U 795 ).
A total of twelve boats of the type XVIIB (Blohm & Voss) were ordered (U 1405 to U 1416). Half of these were canceled before the keel was laid , in favor of submarine class XXI . Only the first three boats were completed. All three were sunk themselves at the end of the war. U 1406 was brought to the USA after the uplift, but no longer put into service. U 1407 served in the Royal Navy as HMS Meteorite from 1946 to 1949 .
The type XVIIG (Germaniawerft) also twelve boats were commissioned (U 1081 to U 1092), but later canceled as well.
