The US Bank Center (formerly First Wisconsin Center and Firstar Center ) is a skyscraper in downtown Milwaukee . When it reaches its final height of 183.2 meters (601  ft ), it is the tallest building in the US state of Wisconsin . Until 2001 it was the headquarters of the Firstar Company, later bought by US Bancorp . Bruce Graham and James DeStefano from SOM designed the building in collaboration with Fitzhugh Scott. Today US Bancorp and IBM operate offices in the building. It also serves as the headquarters of numerous smaller, regional companies.

Construction and history

First Wisconsin National Bank's first plans to build a new building for its headquarters came on August 21, 1969. Although no plans had been made, a building of at least 40 stories was announced. Finally, on March 18, 1971, the final design of a 42-story, 601-foot skyscraper was unveiled. The project design was created by James DeStefanon of SOM in collaboration with the local architectural firm Fitzhugh Scott Architects and announced under the name First Wisconsin Center. Some deaths occurred towards the completion of construction. In July 1973, a construction crane fell 41 sticks. One worker died and 4 others were injured. The final height was reached on August 29, 1972. The first leases were signed on September 4, 1973, after which the tower was officially opened on October 6 of the same year.

First Wisconsin Center

While construction was still going on, some local companies involved in other projects were sued for $ 138 in September 1972. The allegation was directed against the manner in which the building was constructed, whereby a neighboring project in the adjacent block would be forgotten. After several years of disputes, First Wisconsin was found guilty after a subsequent trial. Plaintiffs were awarded US $ 18 million. First Wisconsin appealed. There was a new process in which First Wisconsin got the approval and was exempt from all costs.

In 1987 it was announced that the tower would be bought by Trammell Crow for $ 195 million. The company's plans to erect a taller building went unrealized. In January 1988 the sale was completed and a resale followed.

Firstar Center

First Wisconsin changed its name in December 1988 as it expanded to Firstar Corporation. In May 1992 all names were changed to Firstar Bank. Thus, on September 14, 1992, the building was renamed Firstar Center. In 1996 a skywalk was installed to the neighboring Lewis Center.

In 1998 the building was put up for sale again. In November of that year, the company bought Star Banc of Cincinnati for $ 200 million.

US Bank Center

In October 2000 Firstar Bank announced the purchase of US Bancorp, which will also be the namesake of the bank in the future. The sale was completed in February 2001 and the building was renamed the US Bank Center on May 3, 2002. The company decided to renew the parking garage from 1973 after an incident. The old building was demolished and a new one opened in June 2010.

architecture

The building was designed by James DeStefano and Bruce Graham. It takes up an entire block. It consists of a steel frame and a facade made of white aluminum and glass.

The facade remained largely unchanged. Firstar's plans to put the logo on all four sides of the building met with great criticism. In 2002 it was replaced by a white US Bancorp logo.

The building's window glasses appear in different colors on special occasions, for example at the beginning of holidays, parties or events.

Others

In July 1987, nesting places for peregrine falcons were created at the 41st floor. It was part of an environmental initiative aimed at building up a new population of peregrine falcons, the population of which was almost completely wiped out during the Second World War . The place was chosen because of its attractiveness for birds. One year after the installation, the first two peregrine falcons hatched since the 1960s. A total of 67 young have been born since the installation.
