The United Nations Iraq-Iran Military Observer Group ( UNIIMOG ; German Military Observer Group of the United Nations for Iraq and Iran ) was based on UN Resolution 619 of August 9, 1988 and was deployed in Iraq and Iran from August 1988 to February 1991 .
The aim of the UN mandate was to monitor the ceasefire between the two parties, which had existed since August 20, 1988 and which, based on Resolution 598 of July 20, 1987, was signed directly by Iraq and in 1988 by Iran.
Leadership and participation
The mission was conducted from the headquarters in Tehran and Baghdad . The Secretary General's personal representative for the operation was Jan K. Eliasson from Sweden , who was assisted by Major General Slavko Jovic from Yugoslavia from August 1988 to November 1990 and then Brigadier General S. Anam Khan from Bangladesh as the top military observer . Depending on the situation, the mission comprised between 114 and 400 military and civilian employees. The troops were provided by Argentina , Australia , Bangladesh, Denmark , Finland , Ghana , India , Indonesia , Ireland , Italy , Yugoslavia, Canada , Kenya , Malaysia , New Zealand , Nigeria , Norway , Austria , Peru , Poland , Zambia , Sweden, Senegal , Turkey , Hungary , and Uruguay . A military member was killed during the UNIIMOG mission.
