USM Haller is the name for an internationally known furniture system from the Swiss manufacturer USM U. Schärer Söhne AG, founded in 1885 and based in Münsingen .

history

The modular furnishing system was designed in 1963 by the grandson of the company's founder Ulrich Schärer, Paul Schärer (1933–2011), and the architect Fritz Haller (1924–2012). It was initially intended to equip the company's own office space in the new business building in Münsingen, which was also designed by Haller at the time, and went into series production from 1969. The brand name USM Haller is made up of the initials of the company founder and locksmith Ulrich Schärer, the company headquarters in Münsingen and the surname of Fritz Haller.

The elements are produced in Switzerland. The German subsidiary founded in 1975 with sales and assembly for Germany is based in Bühl (Baden) . From 2017 onwards, assembly will be relocated to Leipzig due to a lack of space in Bühl . The plan is to have the relocation completed by the end of 2018. [outdated]

product

The system consists of screwable, chrome-plated steel tubes and assemblies such as fixtures, cladding, tables, acoustic walls, electrical installations, lighting and additional parts for computer workstations. Different objects can be built with the elements of the modular furniture system: filing cabinets and equipment cabinets, open or closed corpora, rollboys, reception counters, wall cladding and ceiling gratings. The objects can be dismantled and assembled into other objects. The connecting piece between the individual elements is a spherical steel junction, patented by Paul Schärer in 1965, in which several holes with screw threads are embedded.

status

Products from the USM Haller series are used as universal furniture, e.g. B. used in medical practices, offices, reception halls and in the private sector. In 1980 it was included in the New Collection of the State Museum for Applied Arts in Munich . In 2001 it was accepted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York . In 2004 the offices of the MoMa were equipped with USM Haller by USM U. Schärer Söhne.
