The USNS Catawba (T-ATF-168) is an ocean tug of the United States Navy and belongs to the Powhatan class . She has served in the US Navy since 1980.
history
The ship was laid down on December 14, 1977 at the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette , Wisconsin . The launch took place on September 22, 1979, after further equipment work, the Catawba was handed over to the Military Sealift Command of the US Navy on May 28, 1980 .
She was originally assigned to the US Pacific Fleet and is currently part of the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Pacific Support Force and is used worldwide.
On October 29, 2000, the Catawba towed the badly damaged USS Cole out of the port of Aden to be maneuvered onto the lifting ship Blue Marlin . In 2009, the tug supplied the freighter Faina with fuel and food after it had been in the hands of Somali pirates for several months.
