The USNS Powhatan (T-ATF-166) is an ocean tug of the United States Navy and lead ship of the Powhatan class . She served in the US Navy from 1979 to 1999 and was then leased to a private operator. In 2008 the ship was handed over to the Turkish Navy.
history
The ship was laid down on September 30, 1976 at the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette , Wisconsin . The launch took place on June 24, 1978, after further equipment work, the Powhatan was handed over to the Military Sealift Command of the US Navy on June 15, 1979 .
It was then assigned to the US Atlantic Fleet and stationed at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Little Creek , Delaware .
In the summer of 1986, the Powhatan towed the battleship Wisconsin to the Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans , Louisiana in preparation for reactivation . In October of the same year the ship was on site when the Soviet nuclear submarine K-219 sank.
On February 26, 1999, the Powhatan was released from active service in the US Navy and leased from a private operator (DONJON Marine Co., Inc., Hillside, NJ), with the US Navy reserving the right to return the tug at any time to take over into active service.
On February 26, 2008, the ship was put into service as TCG Inebolu (A-590) by the Turkish Navy, after being removed from the US Navy ship list the day before and as part of the Security Assistance Program (SAP), Foreign Military Sale (FMS) was transferred to Turkey.
