The USNS Navajo (T-ATF-169) is an ocean tug of the United States Navy and belongs to the Powhatan class . She has served in the US Navy since 1980.

history

The ship was laid down on December 14, 1977 at the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette , Wisconsin . The launch took place on December 20, 1979, after further equipment work, the Catawba was handed over to the Military Sealift Command of the US Navy on June 13, 1980 .

The ship was originally assigned to the US Pacific Fleet, but is currently part of the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force and is used worldwide.

In the summer of 2006 she towed the Belleau Wood from Pearl Harbor out to the Pacific, where the helicopter carrier was sunk as a reef during the SINKEX 2006.

The Navajo is regularly requested by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to tow the non-powered FLoating Instrument Platform into the research area.
