The USNS Sioux (T-ATF 171) is an ocean tug of the United States Navy and belongs to the Powhatan class . She has served in the US Navy since 1981.
history
The ship was laid down on March 22, 1979 at the Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette , Wisconsin . The launch took place on November 15, 1980, after further equipment work, the Sioux was handed over to the Military Sealift Command of the US Navy on May 1, 1981 .
She was originally assigned to the US Pacific Fleet, but is currently part of the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force and is used worldwide.
In spring 1987 the tug accompanied the hospital ship Mercy on its mission trips. In January 1990 he was involved in the recovery of a watered UH-60 Seahawk .
The Sioux is regularly requested by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to drag the non-powered FLoating Instrument Platform into the research area.
