The USNS Narragansett (T-ATF-167) is an ocean tug of the United States Navy and belongs to the Powhatan class . She served in the US Navy from 1979 to 1999, after which she was transferred to the reserve fleet. The final deletion from the ship register took place on June 5, 2002. Today the ship is owned by NAVAIR at the Patuxent River base.
history
The ship was laid down on May 5, 1977 at the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette , Wisconsin . The launch took place on May 12, 1979, after further equipment work, the Narragansett was handed over to the Military Sealift Command of the US Navy on November 9, 1979 .
She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet. In the fall of 1983 she was used in the search operation after the shooting down of Korean Airlines Flight 007 by Soviet interceptors. A submersible robot was used on board the tug to examine the seabed. In early April 1992, the tug towed the battleship Missouri after its last decommissioning from Long Beach , California to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton , Washington .
The tug was decommissioned on October 18, 1999 and transferred to the reserve fleet . After the deletion from the ship register in June 2002, the Narragansett was transferred as a port tug to the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland .
