history

The Fall River was laid down at New York Shipbuilding in 1943 and launched around 13 months later. The official commissioning was another year later, on July 1, 1945.

In early 1946, the Fall River was assigned to organize Operation Crossroads , the world's first series of nuclear weapons tests . For this, the cruiser was first in the Todd Pacific Shipyards in San Pedro , California ordered where the bodies were changed to make room for a General Staff. Well equipped as a flagship , the Fall River steamed to Pearl Harbor , Hawaii , where Rear Admiral FG Fahrion raised his flag. With Fahrion and his staff, the Fall River was on site during the tests in the Marshall Islands .

In early to mid-1947, the Fall River moved to the Far East for the first time as the flagship of Cruiser Division 1. After the end of the transfer, the cruiser was added to the reserve fleet on October 31 of that year in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard . It remained in this until 1971, when the ship was deleted from the Naval Vessel Register and then passed on to the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for test purposes .
