The USS Gray (DE / FF-1054) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1991 . It was named after Sergeant Ross Franklin Gray (August 1, 1920 - February 27, 1945), a soldier in the United States Marine Corps who single- handedly took a heavily fortified Japanese position on Iwo Jima . He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism .

history

The Gray was laid down on November 19, 1966 at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle , Washington . The launch took place on November 3, 1967, the commissioning with the Navy on April 4, 1970.

The ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, the home port was San Francisco .

The frigate was decommissioned on September 19, 1991, and remained in the Navy register of ships until January 11, 1995. Their scrapping ended in 2001.
