On March 28, 1970, the Lang took up active service. The frigate was named after the sailor John Lang, who served in the United States Navy during the British-American War .
The Lang’s first years of service were uneventful. After the Loma Prieta earthquake in October 1989, the ship, which was lying in the San Francisco Bay Area at that time, supplied the Pacific Gas and Electric with water vapor , which enabled the power supply to be restored in San Francisco . The crew of the Lang received the Humanitarian Service Medal for this .
On December 12, 1991, the Lang was retired after 21 years of service and transferred to the reserve fleet. There she spent a good three years before she was removed from the Naval Vessel Register in January 1995. After six more years of lay in the ship, the ship was scrapped in December 2001.
